Circumcision

Circumcision is the surgical removal of the foreskin that covers head of the penis. The procedure is primarily performed for hygiene, cultural, and religious reasons.

What to expect after a circumcision:

  • You will notice the penis has been wrapped with a Vaseline gauze strip
  • This may or may not stay in place.
  • If it falls off, that's o.k - Just remove it and replace it with a piece of gauze dabbed with petroleum jelly or antibiotic ointment.
  • If the original strip of gauze does not fall off on its own, you may remove it after 24 hours by first soaking it with a warm wet cloth and carefully unwrapping it.
  • Place a piece of gauze dabbed with Vaseline or Neosporin over the tip of the penis at each diaper change for a week to avoid irritation
  • There is usually soreness and sometimes a little bleeding and even some oozing at the site of circumcision. This is a sign that that the body's healing fluids are rushing to the area.
  • By day two it is advised that you press down with the skin at the base of the penis to keep the skin from growing back over the head. *Do this once a day for a week.
  • There will sometimes be a thin, yellow film over the raw area where the foreskin was removed; this is normal.
  • If there is excessive bleeding, pus, swelling or any abnormality that makes you uncomfortable, then please call and bring your baby back this office or bring baby to see his pediatrician for evaluation.
  • If you any questions please call us anytime.
